HYDERABAD, Aug 4: Prolonged power outages across Hyderabad district got even worse after a heavy downpour over the weekend taking a heavy toll on water supply to the residents.

Water supply stopped on Saturday and had not resumed by Sunday evening.

On the other hand the extended power outages triggered street protests in Faraz Villas, Tillak incline, Dadan Shah, Makrani Para and Auto Bhan Road late Saturday night against the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), Hyderabad Management Corporation (HMC) and the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa).

Power breakdowns lasted for more than 15 hours from 2pm on Saturday till 5am on Sunday, and more in other areas.

In Anwar Villas-I in Qasimabad, with a population of between 3,000 and 4,000 and

PTCL Colony in Saddar, people went without electricity for 24 hours from Saturday afternoon till Sunday afternoon. Breakdowns were also reported in other areas including Tillak Incline, Sheedi Goth, Qasimabad Phase-I and II.

Spokesperson for Hesco, Sadiq Kubar, said that around six feeders had been damaged on Saturday due to heavy precipitation. However, he said, they had been repaired and power was restored around 4:30 am on Sunday.

He admitted that at the moment several localities were out of power due to snapping of transmission lines and damaged transformers but he assured that the matter would be dealt with soon.

Meanwhile, Wasa managing director Saleemuddin said that drinking water couldn’t be supplied to the people if there was no electricity.

Talking about draining rain water, he said that it would be completed in all urban areas of Hyderabad within 24 hours. He said that all 26 heavy pumping machines were running round the clock and diesel feul had been made available to ensure uninterrupted functioning of these motors.
