KARACHI, Aug 1: The inaugural Modern Club Founder Members Ranking Tennis Championship, which carries a total prize money of Rs50,000, gets into action at their own club premises from Aug 13.

The details of the event were finalised in a meeting of the organising committee held at the Modern Club on Thursday.

“The staging of the event is aimed at remembering the founding members of the club who have set a healthy trend for the society by establishing it way back in 1967,” former Olympian Abdul Waheed Khan, who is at the helm of affairs of the club, told Dawn.

Modern Club is incurring a sum of Rs200,000 including the prize money, from its own resources and has decided to make the event an annual affair, he added.

The founding members include eminent people like Ahmed E.H. Jaffer, Ahmed Ali, Essa E.H. Jaffer, Ahmed B Khan, Sulaiman Jaffer, Sheriff Khan, Mohammad Zakir Ali Khan, M.M. Ahmed, A. Kader Ahmed, Yousuff Jaffer, Mrs M. Faruqi, Ismail Jaffer, Ismail Zakaria, S. A. Makadumi, Enver Jamal, Haroon Jaffer, A. E. Chinoy and H. H. Ahmed.

Since its coming into being, the club has a rich history of providing many players to the Pakistan teams. Currently, the brothers’ trio of Aqeel Khan, Jalil Khan and Yasir Khan are the product of the same club.

The events that will take place in the tourney include men’s singles, ladies singles, under-17 singles, under-15 singles, under-13 singles, under-11 singles, under-9 singles, men’s doubles, seniors 45-plus doubles and seniors 55-plus doubles.

The last date for submission of entries is Aug 11 with the event concluding on Aug 18.

Meanwhile, a tournament committee has been formed for the smooth functioning of the event.

Abdul Razzak Jaffer is chairman of the organising committee while other members include Abdul Waheed Khan co-chairman, Zafar Hasan Khan secretary, Jalil Khan tournament director and Khalid Rehmani referee.
