Govt to appoint Achakzai as Balochistan governor

QUETTA: The federal government has decided to appoint former bureaucrat Muhammad Khan Achakzai as the new Governor of Balochistan.

Sources in Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) told Dawn.com that Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has sent the summary regarding the appointment of Achakzai as the Balochistan governor to President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday.

Muhammad Khan Achakzai is the son of Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai, a renowned freedom fighter of the sub-continent and the elder brother of PkMAP’s Central Chairman, Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

He belongs to a strong Pashtun nationalist family who fought against the English colonial rulers and then struggled to acquire usurpation rights for the Pashtuns within the framework of Pakistan. His father, Khan, spent 33 years in jail during his struggle against the English colonial rulers and later the military dictators in independent Pakistan.

He is a retired bureaucrat from the Planning Commission of Pakistan, where he served as a chief economist in Grade-22.

Governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfiqar Magsi has already sent his resignation to President Zardari. However, the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) chief, Nawaz Sharif has already decided to give the post to ethnic Pashtuns in Balochistan.

Achakzai's notification regarding his governorship is likely to be issued within next couple of days.

I want to know, Why there is a need of appointing a Governor when CM of that particular province already instated?

Baluchistan belongs to evreybody: Pushtoons, Baluchies and settlers. Do you have problem with that?

It would have been more appropriate if a Balochi was made governor and the seat of President of Pakistan should have gone to an ethnic Pakhtun.

PM Nawaz sharif , has taken Two Right steps in appointing NoN Sardar as a CM as well as now the Governor . Its a long way (yet the right way ) to address the grievances of commoners in the truobled province . Bravo Mr PM , Try the third right step in September 2013 and nominate the presidential candidate from KPK ( a non sardar , a non nawab , a non taliban ) , so that where you lacked the courage ( to give the speakership to a non Punjabi ) , you must amend that wrong step in the next major election ( the new president to replace AAZ )

@haris: The Governor is a constitutional office and is required. Its got nothing to do with the province having a CM or not.

The appointment of a Pashtun Governor of Balochistan Province is a wise step to improve the environment of the whole region as to balance both the Qaums(Tribes) of the province. I myself welcome this decesion as a sound and superior.

The appointment of the new governor for Baluchistan has done according to the welling of establishment more than the Nawaz Sharif and so others but being an economist Mr.Muhammad khan is not a right person as he would to control the complicit political situation of the province. The history of PKMAP is always against the bureaucrat and his followers but unfortunately finally punjab has once again succeed for their aim.
