KARACHI, June 5: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator has said that a study being conducted under a comprehensive plan for power generation from garbage will be completed within three months.

KMC administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi said this at a meeting with British consulting company consultant Richard Cook.

Director municipal services Dr Shaukat Zaman, chief engineer contract management Khalid Masroor and other officers were also present in the meeting.

The city administrator said that energy was being generated from garbage in developed countries and those countries had built an integrated and effective system of solid waste management in their big cities, which had produced best results. He said that Karachi produced over 10,000 tonnes of garbage a day and 8,000 to 10,000 people were working for lifting garbage.

During the meeting, British consultant Richard Cook informed about details of the study on solid waste management system and emphasised on its value and importance.

Discussing possibilities of generating energy from garbage with the officials, Mr Cook said that a comprehensive report in light of the study being conducted in this regard should be prepared, which could attract foreign investors for investment in this sector in Karachi.—PPI
