KARACHI, May 24: Two former national champions — Shahbaz and Faraz — were among the players who stormed into the finals of boys and youth categories at the NBP Cup Karachi Boxing Championship at Ustad Mohammad Sattoo stadium in Lyari on Friday.

Shahbaz, who won gold medal in the national championship held at Peshawar in 2011 in the same category, out pointed Adil Kacchi 2-1 in 42kg of boys’ under-14 to set a date with Noor-ul-Hasan, who defeated Fahim 3-0.

Similarly, Faraz, who fetched gold in the national’s in 2010, justified his credentials by getting the better of Pervaiz 2-1 to earn a place in youth under-18 last four.

As many as 76 pugilists belonging to all districts of the city are competing in the event which is organised by the Sindh Boxing Association (SBA).

The championship will form criteria for selection of 40 pugilists for an extensive four month camp training in preparation for the all-Sindh competition and national juniors’, secretary of the SBA, Asghar Baloch, said on Friday.

The all-Sindh contests will be held at Mirpurkhas while the national juniors take place at Lahore.
