SUKKUR, May 2: Commissioner Sukkur division Dr Niaz Ali Abbasi directed assistant commissioners to inspect all polling stations in districts and talukas of the division with police officials and submit reports to district returning officers and deputy commissioners concerned so that better arrangements could be made on the election day.

He was speaking at a meeting in connection with election arrangements on Thursday with Sukkur Range DIG Sultan Khawaja, deputy commissioner Ghotki Farid Ahmed Junejo, Ghotki SSP Abdul Salam Shaikh and rangers and army officials at the Council Hall, Mirpur Mathelo, Ghotki district.

Sukkur commissioner said that officers were required to make sure that all 46 points in the Election Commission’s code of conduct were followed while directing election officers to stay in touch with each other.

Earlier in the meeting, second additional deputy commissioner of Ghotki said in his briefing that there were a total of 568,065 voters in the Ghotki district where 524 polling stations would be set up. He said that 233 polling stations would be highly sensitive while 178 polling stations would be categorised under the sensitive category.

He said that a District Command and Control Room would be set up at the deputy commissioner’s complex which would work round the clock from May 5, adding that deputy commissioner and Ghotki SSP would be available there.

He said that emergency duties have been assigned to eleven specialist doctors, seven surgeons and 53 medical officers for the election day to deal with any emergencies. Moreover, 11 ambulances from multinational companies, four snorkels and 53 fire fighters would also be deployed on May 11, he added.

Later in the day, Sukkur commissioner and DIG met candidates contesting from Ghotki district and inquired about their problems.

Law and order reviewed

Sukkur deputy commissioner Muzammil Hussain Halipota chaired a separate meeting with officers from the police and army in connection with maintaining law and order on election day.

In their briefig, army officials said that group heads would be formed in Pannu Aquil, Rohri, Salehpat and Sukkur.

SSP Sukkur told the meeting that a list of sensitive polling stations and areas would be forwarded to army officials and a security plan would be chalked out in consultation with district returning officers and directed the law enforcing officers to finish deploying police and rangers contingents at highly sensitive polling stations.

Control rooms have been set up in five talukas of Sukkur district, he added.
