LAHORE, Oct 31: Robbers shot dead a 40-year-old shopkeeper while thieves took away cash and valuables worth millions in five major hits in the city on Wednesday.

Later, shopkeeper’s family and local traders staged a protest on College Road and chanted slogans against the police.

Township police said three armed men, riding a bike, entered the shop of Muhammad Saeed near Khokhar Chowk around 7:40pm, held him at gunpoint and demanded cash and valuables.

When Saeed of Township offered resistance, the suspects opened fire on him and fled empty-handed.

Saeed, a father of three, with a single bullet injury was taken to Jinnah Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police shifted the body for autopsy.

Soon after the incident, the heirs of Saeed and traders of nearby markets gathered on College Road and protested against the police for half an hour. They demanded strict action against the culprits.

Thieves broke into the house of Ahmad Usman in EME Housing Society in Chuhng police limits and made off with cash, jewellery and other valuables worth Rs12 million.

Unidentified people sneaked into the house of Mahboob Bhatti in J-Block Phase-I of the Defence Housing Authority in Defence A police limits and made off with cash and valuables worth Rs2.2 million.

Thieves burgled into the house of Shabbir Husain in FF Block in Defence A police limits and made off with cash and valuables worth Rs3.5 million.

Thieves entered the house of Waqas Sadfar in Faisal Town and took away cash and valuables worth Rs1.8 million.

Unidentified people broke into the house of Shabbir in the Architect Housing Society in Nawab Town police limits and left with cash and valuables worth Rs1.7 million.

CLASH: Four under-trial prisoners and a policeman were injured after two rival groups of prisoners clashed with each other at Model Town courts lock-up here on Wednesday.

Naseerabad police inquiries revealed that members of the Burger group led by Atif and the Sheikh group led by Emanuel, who were brought to the courts from the Camp Jail for hearing of different cases, attacked each other with blades in the lock-up.

On-duty policemen tried to overcome the situation, but police head-constable Umer Draz sustained injuries in the attack. Later, police overpowered the prisoners and locked them up.

Four prisoners Muddasir, Naveed, Sarfraz and Emanuel Khushi suffered wounds and were shifted to the jail hospital.

Police said members of both groups were involved in several incidents of dacoity and robbery.

 STABBED TO DEATH: An alleged pick-pocket was stabbed to death by his fellow following a dispute over cash distribution in Tibbi City on Wednesday.

Police said Moazzam Khan attacked Nawaz after a quarrel and then fled the scene. They claimed that both of them were wanted in incidents of pick-pocket. They used to target people in areas of Lorry Adda and Data Ganj Bakhsh shrine.

Police shifted the body to a hospital for an autopsy and began investigation.
