Women robbed

RAWALPINDI, May 1: Two women were robbed of cash and gold in Dhoke Hassu and Westridge in almost a similar fashion, police said on Tuesday.

Zaheer Mughal, in a complaint to Ratta Amral police, said he had gone out of the city leaving his wife and children at home. On his return his wife Ms Rashida told him that a woman along with two men came to her house and offered her charity food.

The terror-stricken woman told her husband that they forced their way into the house and started thrashing her. Later the intruders took her at gunpoint and forced her to give up cash and gold ornaments lying in the house.

She said they took away Rs50,000, two digital cameras, gold ornaments, a cellphone and a licensed pistol.

In another incident, Shaista Jabeen, the robbery victim told police that she was at home when two robbers entered and took her at gunpoint.

She said the gunmen snatched gold bangles she was wearing at that time and managed to escape. — Staff Reporter

Workers problems

TAXILA, May 1: Minister of State for Defence Production Sardar Saleem Haider on Tuesday vowed to resolve the problems of defence industries workers and promised more financial incentives for them in coming budget.

He was addressing a function held at POF workers welfare club to mark international Labour Day.

The function was organised by POF Workmen Association to pay tributes to those who laid down their lives for labour cause.

The minister said Pakistan People’s Party was striving devotedly for the rights and welfare of workers since its inception. President POF Workmen Association Tariq Butt and local PPP leaders also spoke on this occasion.— Correspondent

Natco bus service

MIRPUR, May 1: The Northern Areas Transport Corporation (Natco) is going to launch its latest non-stop air-conditioned bus service on Mirpur-Muzaffarabad route via Islamabad in the first week of the current month.

AJK transport minister Tahir Khokhar said on Tuesday that the integrated plan to launch the Natco bus service between Muzaffarabad and Mirpur was aimed at ensuring safe and comfortable travelling to the passengers.

He said a team of high-ups from the Natco management had been invited to Muzaffarabad on May 4 to undertake final survey for launching its bus service on inter-district routes in AJK under a phased programme.

The company will be provided with the required facilities of the full-fledge bus terminals at both the stations furnished with all required amenities both for the passengers and the bus operating company staff, the minister said. — APP

Six shops demolished

RAWALPINDI, May 1: During the ongoing operation against illegal constructions in the city, the Rawal Town Municipal Authority (RTMA) staff demolished six illegally constructed shops and sealed four houses on Tuesday.

The RTMA staff conducted an operation in Bangash Colony and six illegally constructed shops were demolished while four houses constructed in Satellite Town and its adjacent areas without approval from the authority concerned were also sealed.

The operation was launched by RTMA on the special instructions of administrator Rawal Town Saif Anwar Jappa under the supervision of Tehsil Municipal Officer and Town Officer Regulation.

The administrator warned the officers concerned that they should improve their performance otherwise disciplinary action would be taken against them. He said the survey about dangerous buildings should be completed within shortest possible time so that the residents of such buildings could be served notices to vacate the buildings before the start of monsoon rains. — APP

Railway tracks recovered

RAWALPINDI, May 1: The Railway Police recovered about 30 tons of railway tracks stolen from different sections.

Railway Police spokesman said on Tuesday that on a tip-off, Mandra police along with Motorway police stopped a truck loaded with railway tracks being shifted from Gujranwala Steel Mills to Pakistan Steel Mills.

He said all the divisional superintendents had been directed to report missing tracks in their respective areas. He said that the recovered tracks would be sent for chemical analysis.

SSP Railway Police Rawalpindi appreciated the performance of Mandra police and announced appreciation certificate for them. — APP

Drive against one-wheeling

RAWALPINDI, May 1: The City Traffic Police (CTP) during operation against one-wheeling arrested eight youngsters allegedly involved in the practice.

The CTP launched special drive against wheelie and made several arrangements to curb the activity, said City Traffic Officer (CTO) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ghulam Abbas Tarar. He said those found involved in the activity were being sent behind the bars under section 99/A.

He said though the activity was already being checked by traffic officials deputed on the city roads, special arrangements had been made to control rash and dangerous driving and one-wheeling in the city.

Ghulam Abbas Tarar said that the traffic police officers were directed to keep a vigilant eye on the one-wheelers so that action in accordance with the law could be taken against them.  — APP

Cleanliness campaign

RAWALPINDI, May 1: As many as 1,556 workers of Municipal Services Department along with other officials have been deployed to clean the city areas under the ongoing grand cleanliness drive.

The garbage from four union councils with several other areas is being removed everyday in a bid to make the town a model city under a week-long cleanliness campaign launched on April 26. More than 25 vehicles have been engaged to remove the garbage and waste from different areas. The cleanliness drive was started in the city on the special directives of Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan. — APP
