KARACHI, March 27: A 50-year-old Awami National Party worker was shot dead in what police described as “infighting” within the party’s two groups on Sunday.

However, ANP sources rejected the claim, saying that ANP ward UC-12 worker Gul Zareen was killed by unidentified men.

The incident occurred near the Chapel Gardens on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road where reportedly two groups of the ANP fought over some issue, SP of Gulshan-i-Iqbal Ahsan Umar said.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities, he added. Following the incident, tension gripped the locality and shops and other businesses were shut down in the area.

SHO wounded, robbed

A police inspector was wounded and robbed of his cellphone on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

Station House Officer of the Solider Bazaar police station Irfan Ahmed alias Cobra was intercepted by four suspects riding on two motorcycles on Ahsanabad Road.

Police said the suspects demanded that the inspector hand over his cellphone to them.

The policeman gave his cellphone and when tried to reach out to get his loaded pistol, the suspects opened fire on him.

SHO Irfan Ahmed suffered two bullet wounds, in his thigh and one of his toes. However, he fired back at the suspects, but they fled, the police added.

The suspects’ motorcycles were without number plates, the police said.
