TIMERGARA, Aug 17: Jamaat-i-Islami and Awami National Party workers protested here on Friday the alleged burning of a religious book by an Afghan cleric in Lower Dir district.

Samar Bagh police said they had registered a case against the cleric and began investigation.

People had complained to police that students of a local seminary burned a religious book on the orders of their teacher, Zabiullah.

ANP workers demonstrated against the burning incident in Jandol area and those of JI in Munda, Mayar and Samar Bagh area and demanded punishment of the cleric.

Also in the day, the health and anti-corruption teams got five druggists booked over sale of expired medicines in Timergara tehsil.

They also collected samples of medicines for lab test.

Anti-corruption inspector Wasiyat Khan and drug inspector Ziaullah along with police officials visited different drug markets and warned druggists against selling substandard or fake medicines.

Meanwhile, Lower Dir district police officer Salim Marwat on Friday said special security arrangements had been made in the district for Eid. He said leaves of policemen had been cancelled for Eid, while security checks had been put in place for 400 public places in Lower Dir.

Mr Marwat said sale of firecrackers had been banned in the area, while those found selling them would be dealt with strictly.

He urged people to cooperate with police for maintaining peace in the area.
