CHARSADDA: The local police and elders on Thursday foiled an attempt of 55-year-old man to marry a nine-year-old girl in the limits of Mandani police station near Shakoor Qilla Mardhad area here.

The police arrested the girl’s father, brother-in-law and nikahkhwan and sent the girl to Darul Amaan. The man, Dr Malang, along with brother Mohamad Diyar Khan and nikhakhwan Sher Zaman had come to the area from Dir for the marriage planned to settle a monetary issue.

The girl told the police that her father borrowed money from Dr Malang on interest to buy a bull and three goats but failed to return it after a road accident handicapped him.

She said the lender later did a deal with her father under which the former would marry her after writing off the loan.

The police said they made the arrests on the complaint of local elders. They said the girl would be sent to Darul Amaan.

However, they were later released.

Assistant commissioner Noor Wali Khan told reporters that 4,600 vaccination refusal cases were reported in the district but they all were traced by quick response teams.

He said 27 parents were arrested under Section 3MPO for refusing to vaccinate their children but they were freed after they promised to administer anti-polio drops to the children.

The assistant commissioner said 200,000 children would be vaccinated during the ongoing anti-polio campaign, which would last until March 5. PROTEST: The SST Association Charsadda protested the tasking of teachers with invigilating the SSC examinations slated to begin on March 19 under the Peshawar Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education.

Chief of the association Ahmad Jan Mohammadzai told reporters that the PBISE had ignored teachers of Charsadda for examination duty in the district in violation of merit.

He demanded that the board task teachers with invigilating duty for the next SSC examination in the district.

DEMAND: The Employees Union District Council (EUDC) has threatened agitation against the delay in the upgrade of their service structure.
