WASHINGTON: Pakistan will join more than 70 other nations in the US capital on Wednesday in an effort to thrash out a comprehensive international strategy for combating violent extremism.

US President Barack Obama is hosting the conference to discuss “means of combating terrorism and extremism” in the world, the White House said.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan is expected to outline the National Action Plan for combating terrorism at the conference.

“He will inform the participants of Pakistan’s efforts to combat this threat and the sacrifices it has made,” a Pakistani diplomat told Dawn.

“He will also highlight the government’s long-term efforts to change the mindset that begets extremism.”

The White House said in a statement that the summit conference would “highlight domestic and international efforts to prevent violent extremists and their supporters from radicalising, recruiting, and inspiring individuals” to join their cause.

US security agencies will also seek cooperation from their international partners for preventing the groups from recruiting and inspiring people in the United States. Such efforts became “even more imperative in light of recent, tragic attacks in Ottawa, Sydney, and Paris,” the White House said.
