Website review: Kids ahead!

Published February 7, 2015

HEY kids, we know that you are the future scientists, researchers, teachers, doctors and engineers of our nation and at this age you need to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and math to help you decide what you really want to be when you grow up. So today we will visit a cool website that is all about science!

Kids Ahead is a site with an exciting science environment that provide fun and challenging opportunities and activities, all related to science, environment, animals, engineering, space, marine biology and some new sections such as those on wind energy, robotics, biometrics and forensic, which you may have not seen on any other science website for kids.

The site opens with vibrant colours and instead of having typical menu in text form, it has symbols that denote the inside content. For instance, an eye for biometrics and forensics; a cloud for extreme weather; human brain for medical innovations; lion for animal kingdom and there are many more interesting symbols in the menu.

When you click any of it, a box opens with brief information, giving you an idea of what the category is about; you can expand it by clicking on any topic, a short well-written article opens with related articles/news, events, activity and cool jobs at the bottom. The good thing is that the content on the website is not detailed, it is brief and to the point.

The activities are also fun, some are easy like creating your very own pinwheel in the wind energy section or create a comet with your friends by using items lying around your house in the space section.

However, there are some difficult activities which are not suitable for very young kids and need adult supervision if you really intend to do things like building a ‘Fog Tornado!’ The website is a great place to spend some free time exploring the world of science and impress your teachers and elders with your knowledge.

According to the website creator, the Kids Ahead programme is an initiative to increase the number of kids with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competencies and interests. So what are you waiting for? Start exploring on www.kidsahead.com
