Despite threats, Pakistan goes on with ceremony at Wagah

LAHORE: Not only a day had passed to the carnage that claimed at least 60 lives in a suicide blast at Wagah that Punjab Rangers went on with the routine flag-lowering ceremony at the border between Pakistan and India.

The ceremony came as the Punjab Rangers decided to continue with the flag-lowering ceremony at the border despite Sunday's attack that left a pall of gloom across the country.

The decision came at a time when rumours were floating in political and media circles that the ceremony had been postponed for at least a period of three days and according to some until the situation normalised.

With chants of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’ in the background, people came to attend the ceremony in large numbers, leaving a clear and sound message to the attackers that the country was standing tall and brave and could by no means be weakened.

People cheered Punjab Rangers personnel during the ceremony and kept on with slogans of ‘Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan' (long live Pakistan).

Corps Commander Lahore Lieutenant General Naveed Zaman said, "No one can take away passion and bravery possessed by Pakistanis."

Pakistan army also extended its praise to the Punjab Rangers for holding the flag lowering ceremony despite looming threats.

what is one thing common among all the terror groups regardless of their affiliation. They need money to finance, access to arms and ammunition and above all, people (recruitment) to carry out their plans. Cut the source and these organizations will go away. Simple as that. Educate the masses both religious and school. Give them jobs. Create a system in such a way that the people stay busy and give them a reason to live. Empty mind is a devil's work shop. when they have time on their hand, and poverty in their homes, they more than likely to join these evil organizations. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

This is really stupid. The ceremony at the border has no patriotic, nationalist or other meaning we should take pride on or give so much importance too. We lost many 60 pakistani nationals at that meaningless ceremony yesterday and instead of deploying rangers to hunt for the criminals, we have deployed all the rangers at the border to secure the ceremony. Mr. Asim Bajwa needs to understand that restarting the ceremony the very next day (even with Allah hu Akbar and Pakistan Zindabad chants) does not translate into us showing national resolve or standing united against terrorism. This is just insanity.

Isn't it a double speak? India postponed this for 3 days on request of Pakistan.India did not allow spectators from its side, as a condolence to people died in blast, but Pakistan allowed and went ahead with it, after requesting India to postpone !

Noticed the deserted Indian side of the border... Don't think any other nation in the whole world has the as much courage and stamina as Pakistanis, just 3-4 years of stability is what needed and Pakistan would be on the track again Insha'Allah. Pakistan is such a big market and full of talent that with all the shortcomings there is potential to become one of the top emerging economies again. I hope IK understands this and waits for his turn.

I believe this shows, India's large heartedness a signal, that we are with you in this grief, and not celebrating from our side , which has happened during first time in history Understand that Pakistan wanted to send a message to terrorists that we are not scum bing to their threat . It should have been much better if both and Pakistanis and Indian General citizen would have given these terrorists a combined message together, not breaking this long tradition.

Great spirit shown by the nation. Apart from that the nation needs to exhibit some sense also. People should be educated to keep an eye on miscreants. They should report suspicious activities. After all these terrorists are hiding among us. Somebody is providing them logistics and support. Everyone should keep their eyes, ears and nose open. This ceremony just keeps alive futile jingoistic emotions on both sides of the border. So many positive activities can hold the captive audiences of India and Pakistan enthralled. Musical concerts(even Anthakshri will do), folk dances, drawing competitions for children, blood donation camps, puppet shows.... People want to have a good time and we all want to believe in the goodness of the neighbour. Why spread negativity through senseless stomping and juvenile face making? This ritual just reinforces the false picture of the other. Tourists come with their children. Children with tender, malleable thoughts. We must mould the new generation in new ways. I may be a dreamer but I am not the only one. My condolences to Pakistan.

Observations - (1) Indian side is almost empty of any viewers and no slogans from Indian side, that means Indians don't care for this circus any more, (2) Pakistani side, just the following day after killing of over 60 persons in a terrorist attack was full of people and shouting vociferously national & religious slogans like "Allahu akbar"...why bring religion into everything...bringing religion like even in this circus? (3) What do both the countries achieve by this daily ritual or circus? If Pakistan is adamant, let it continue carrying out this circus unilaterally on its side and India as a civilized country should unilaterally stop this non-sense on its side and concentrate on positive things like promotion of culture/arts/sports/development/humanities/social issues/science & technology, etc.

The flag lowering ceremony is a 17th century military tradition known as beating retreat, Nations across the world hoist national flags in the morning and lowered before evening, Hoisting in the morning is a sign of strength, and lowering is a sign of respect and dignity for the flag and for country it represents. I must congratulate Pakistan Army and Rangers to continue the old tradition, by continuing it, they have given a clear message to Terrorists and THOSE BEHIND THEM that no matter what happens you cannot force us to change our traditions. Most of the Indians are calling it a silly ritual and demanding it should be discontinued, why are they telling us to do it? why cant they ask their government to stop it, after all India is the biggest democracy and it will listen to its citizens.

I am sure they would have hoped the Rangers and other forces could track down the killers and the home grown terrorists who are attacking the citizens of Pakistan. Anyway, if slogans are more effective as condolences for those who died yesterday, bravo Pakistan. I , however, wish to say a silent prayer for the dead, not make a spectacle. Peace for the suffering families is my wish to the Pakistanis who have to face this tragedy of losing family members yesterday.

Hello Pak friends Condolences to the deaths at Wagah. I lived in the USA when the 9/11 attack happened. After the attack all the Airports were closed for more than a week due to security reasons and to save the lives. Does it mean they were not brave enough? What followed afterwards proved different. Pakistan should have suspended this ceremony to show the respect to the innocent lives lost. First we need to recognise that there is value for the life - human or animal. This is a Culture that should be developed and propagated to the masses. All the other problems will get resolved automatically.

I have no doubt in my mind. The hostile ceremony in which each side shows how angry it is with the other side must stop! This shows we are trapped in this. This has become something like a tourist tamasha. where nationlistic feeling are whipped up by each side. The entire ceremony takes us to the many centuries back where man used to show how brave he was by fighing with animals with bare hands. We all need to move on and this ceremony should stop. To show the pseudo aggression the soldiers on both sides are made to walk abnormally with the foot raised above the head and stomp aggressively All this is unnecessary. @Hani Different countries have different recruitment techniques to motivate the youngsters to join its forces, in the US, the Blue Angels and the Thunder Birds are used to entice the young generation to join the Airforce or Navy. Pakistan army uses the border ceremony to drum up support and the desire to join the forces. Pakistan is a poor country that cannot use airshows to drum up recruitment. I can bet those who lost their family members will rather appreciate India for showing some sensitivity towards their grief. I am proud of India for showing at least some degree of respect for fellow humans and showing concern for lives of their own citizens. There is difference between empathy and surrender. Now onwards do this ceremony twice a day and thump your chest loudly in front of Indians and let us see how great Pakistan becomes.

Many Indian spectators were turned away, and told of the need for mourning. It is morally wrong to interpret the Indian action as 'behesti' and make fun of them.

Indians are just showing respect for the dead.

@Hani a rational thought, more of us need to come forward with a rational and progressive approach like this..ceremony at Wagah Border from either side is more of a Jingoism..creates hatred..more of a ritual to let down each other by flashing their feet in air...nothing else..

The picture shown above is not good and should not be displayed. The Indian soldier's foot is higher than the Ranger and his bearing is straight compared to our Ranger who is bent forward in a rather awkward shape.

the bigger message which has been sent to Indian authorities is that Pakistan is seldom to be believed....first you request for adjournment of proceedings ,and than go ahead at the last moment to make a point.Indian authorities stopped the visitors at a good distance from the ceremony point only to be cheated by Pakistan trying to be look macho at the cost of Indians.

For all the people opposed to this ceremony, what is the point of National Day, Labor Day and what not. If you observe these days than you are hypocrite.I suggest you should go to work on these days.

It is an act of Indian Terrorism against Pakistan. It is India which supports and incites Pakistani Taliban against Pakistan. At this moment Indian Government officials are trying to shed the Alligator tears as if they have a lot of sympathy for Pakistan, What A Chankya's teachings? I wonder what Indian reaction would be if this action would nave occurred on the Indian side of Wahga. Whole Indian media, Indian Government, BJP, RSS, RAW, Indian FM Shamsa Swaraj, Indian Defense Minister Aron Jathley would be weeping like a scary baby. They would have charged Pakistan without any proof, however if now Pakistan charges India for this cowardly act, then India will definitely ask for proofs, though India never provided any proof of Pakistan Involvement to Pakistan in any terrorist attack in India.

@Ammy Pakistan has been victimized for too long by cowardly terrorists, this ceremony at Wagah is part of our heritage which we are proud of. Pakistanis are not cowards and don't fear barbarians, only fear the Almighty who will protect all those who need protection. The tragedy which took place at Wagah was horrific, and yet if we shut down such ceremonies, the enemy will win. Please understand this! No people are more resilient than brave Pakistanis!

@Shaquille FYI .. Pakistani side requested to stop this ceremony for 3 days after the suicide attacks and Indians obliged . However they started it next day without informing their counterparts in India.. India is also going to start this ceremony now

@Haroon Al-Rashid Haroon Sahib, the ritual is a bit of a spectacle, but I feel it is caricatured too much. I do agree, all that goose-stepping (which isn't even a part of Indian forces drill - don't know about Pakistan) is reminiscent of German and Russian drills. Totalitarian regimes, both. However, my wish would be that for 3 day (or a week maybe), the Indian and Pakistani troops exchange positions. Indians lower and raise the Pakistani flag, and Pakistanis the Indian flag. Each side steps into the others' territory briefly, and make this less about aggression than respect for the others' sovereignty. This will be a fitting tribute to those killed, and a devastatingly demoralising response to the extremists that perpetrated this atrocity. Maybe then, we might find this spectacle a little less unworthy.
