KARACHI: The port city's police on Tuesday was seen actively investigating the Edhi Centre robbery that took place on Sunday. After issuing sketches of the suspected criminals behind the robbery a day before, police officials said they have identified two of the robbers with the help of criminal records.

Police said the two alleged robbers had previously been implicated in several other robbery cases as well, adding that one of them had also worked at the Edhi Centre for some time.

Raids are being conducted in parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Lyari and other areas to arrest the suspected identified criminals, police said.

On Sunday, robbers had struck the head office of the Edhi Foundation in the Mithadar area where they held all the staff including renowned philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi hostage and made away with gold, foreign currency and other valuables worth millions of rupees.

Eight robbers had stormed into the head office around 9:45am and broke into the storage lockers that contained five kilograms of gold, foreign and local currency worth millions of rupees, Faisal Edhi, son of Abdul Sattar Edhi, had said.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had also taken notice of the incident and ordered police to immediately arrest the culprits behind the incident. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons at the Mithadar police station on the complaint of Faisal Edhi.
