KARACHI: The government accepted the demands of the Hindu community in the early hours of Sunday after which the protesting members of the religious minority community ended their sit-in and returned home, said Dr Ramesh Vankwani.

Thousands of the community’s members had come here from all over the province on Saturday evening to protest and stage a sit-in at the Karachi Press Club against the non-arrest of killers of two Hindu brothers who had been shot dead in Umerkot over a month ago.

The protesters were demanding arrest of the killers and solution to other problems being faced by the community.

Responding to Dawn queries, Dr Vankwani, the patron of the Pakistan Hindu Council and a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MNA, said that a high-level delegation of the government met the protesters and accepted their demands and a two-page agreement was signed. A follow-up meeting would be held with the chief minister in a day or two, he said.

According to the agreement, the government assured the protesters that killers would be arrested soon.

DIG Sanaullah Abbasi’s inquiry report regarding the killing would be shared with the family and if it was found unsatisfactory, a judicial inquiry would be initiated or a fresh inquiry would be conducted by senior police officers to be selected in consultation with the family.
