Four policemen shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI: Gunmen on motorcycles late Monday shot dead four policemen in Karachi, police said.

The incident occurred in Ibrahim Hyderi area, a poor neighbourhood in the eastern part of the port city where the policemen were on duty.

“The attackers came on motorcycles, they opened fire on the police and fled away,” senior police official Munir Shaikh told AFP, adding that “all four policemen died in the attack”.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 per cent of Pakistan's GDP, has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years.

Rangers are currently taking part in a joint operation with police in Karachi aimed at cleansing the city of terrorists and other hardcore criminals, including hired killers, gun runners and drug peddlers.

Earlier last month a Taliban suicide attacker killed one of Pakistan's best-known police commanders, famed for his fearless work tackling militants in the city.

Chaudhry Aslam, the head of the criminal investigation department who had survived numerous assassination attempts in the past, died along with two other officers when a bomber targeted a police convoy on an expressway in eastern Karachi.

Four police officers killed - nobody caught and no one has taken the responsibility. No wonder we don't see the dedication from our officers. Their lives are worth nothing and the government does not provide justice to them or to their families. How can we expect loyalty from them, when a) they are not paid well and b) if something happens to them, the perpetrators are seldom found and held accountable. I feel sorry for the officers and their families - we need to remember - their lives are worth exactly the same to their families, as our leaders lives are, to their families. We are all equal.

condolences for the grieving families. Gunmen on motorcycles , again I say, put a ban on double sawari, in the past it has helped a lot. why is no one paying attention to this?

There are two aspects of the issue. On the one hand the cold blooded beasts killed the policemen have no respect for any relationship. They just not killed four policemen, they traumatized lives of four families including fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters naming few relations. On the other hand the senior police officers are taking kickbacks instead of providing modern arms and ammunition. Govt of Sindh has failed to provide safe environment to the residents of Karachi.

@independentthinker: All lives are equal. Common person or the policeman. No distinction. Do you not think that people has enough of corrupt and inept policing. I bet you can not name one good thing about the police in Pakistan. There was not a single case of killing resolved by police and you expect to get the killers in this case apprehended. You must be joking, right. The solution to these does not lie in good CSI and criminal justice. The solution can be found in the Senate and National assemblies and the GHQ. Independent thinker do not point the questions to the right people. Think twice before you vote next time.

Solution is policing by local police force. I live in San Diego and the police here is based on local people who eat,drink live and have local roots. When was the last time a policeman has held the door open for a fellow citizen. Impossible in any part of Pakistan. When do you see a nod from a policeman acknowledging your presence. This is what we have here not just the wild car chases and police shooting people. I was stopped lately by two policemen and I had a mind stimulating conversation with both from science to new trends in technology and guess what no bribery either since police does not handle money.

the way to deal with this is to roll out solar powered CCTV cameras in all bazaars, with which such motorbikes once photographed can be traced. If we also institute automatic number plate recognition technology, the camera can actually check if a vehicle has insurance automatically. i.e. people with false plates can be pulled over when they are spotted by a camera. That way using vehicles in crime becomes much easier to trace, and this assassination by motorcycle will be reduced.
