Kharif water loss taken up with India
NEW DELHI, Oct 23: A two-day meeting between Pakistan and India began on Thursday to discuss the issue of Chenab water blockade by India which caused a loss of around 0.2 million acre feet of water to Pakistan.
A six-member delegation headed by Indus Water Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah represented Pakistan.
Pakistan conveyed to India that the blockade caused a loss of billions of rupees to farmers who could not get adequate water for Kharif crops because Indian authorities had filled Baglihar dam built on Chenab.
Mr Shah said under the Indus Basin Treaty a minimum of 55,000 cusecs water should flow to Pakistan at Marala Headworks in the peak season but it had received only 22,000 cusecs.
“This is a breach of the treaty as Pakistan has exclusive right over the river,” he said, adding that Pakistan wanted compensation for the loss.—APP
