NEW DELHI, April 2: India and Pakistan have agreed on a common map of a disputed border estuary flowing into the Arabian Sea, a top Indian official said on Monday, bringing the long-running feud closer to resolution.
The row over the Sir Creek estuary was discussed during talks between Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Pakistani counterpart Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri in New Delhi on Monday on the sidelines of a South Asian conference.
“On Sir Creek, they noted that we’ve completed the joint survey,” Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told a news conference on the eve of a two-day South Asian summit.
“We ... have one common map of the area, from which we will now work and try and see how far we can take this issue to a resolution, hopefully.”
Menon said the ministers also discussed their dispute over Siachen and were “optimistic” about finding a solution to it as well.
