ISLAMABAD, April 9: The Supreme Court issued notice to Prosecutor General Accountability (PGA) on Wednesday on the petition of Mr Asif Ali Zardari, who stated before the apex court that trial in cases pending against him was not to proceed and he was made to languish in jail for over six years.
“Asif Zardari is under incarceration from the last more than six years and it appears that the petitioner would remain under incarceration and face trial in those cases for the rest of his life,” Mr Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, counsel for Mr Zardari, said before the two-judge court.
The petitioner is seeking direction from the apex court that he should be sent to Karachi to allow him to face trial in six criminal cases pending in different courts at Karachi.
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justice Mian Ajmal and Justice Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi, issued notice to the PGA to appear on April 23. The court also directed that if the PGA was not able to appear due to any reason, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) should make alternate arrangements.
Mr Pirzada and Mr Farooq H. Naek represented the petitioner.
