Gen Wynne cancels visit to US

ISLAMABAD, May 13: Annoyed with increasing US unilateralism and its mistrust of Pakistan military’s role in the fight against terrorism, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Khalid Shamim Wynne cancelled on Friday his six-day visit to Washington.

Military sources said Gen Wynne had conveyed his decision to US Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen. No reason was given for the cancellation, though it is understood that it was meant to convey Pakistan military’s displeasure over the Abbottabad raid.

Gen Wynne’s visit, from May 22 to 27, had been scheduled a couple of months ago, at a time when both militaries were apparently trying to repair their relationship in the aftermath of the Raymond Davis episode.

The ties between Pakistan and the US touched an all-time low after the US carried out the May 2 operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed. The raid violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and also battered the image of military at home.
