HYDERABAD/SUKKUR/LARKANA: Widespread rainfall was reported right from Hyderabad to Kashmore on Wednesday night and Thursday with some casualties occurring in Hyderabad, Khairpur and Mirpurkhas.
Different areas received heavy, moderate and light spells of rain in Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Kandhkot-Kashmore, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze and other districts.
In Hyderabad, heavy rain lashed the city and its adjoining areas on Thursday evening.
With heavily overcast sky since morning, cold breeze turned weather more pleasant. A brief spell of drizzle had visited the city in the morning and, later at around 4:30pm, a heavy spell arrived and continued for around 20-25 minutes.
The local Met department recorded 20mm and 13mm of rain at its airport and city offices, respectively.
Almost all main roads and arteries across Hyderabad, Qasimabad and Latifabad talukas remained submerged till late in the evening. The worst-affected areas were the City Cloth Market, Makki Shah, Qazi Qayyum, Tulsi Das, Qadam Gah Maula Ali, Phulelli, Paretabad, Ghau Shala and Fakir Ka Pir. Accumulation of rainwater everywhere affected business and commercial activities.
Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts also received rainfall. Local Met office said that in three hours of rainfall, 8mm was recorded in Larkana and 5mm in Mohenjo Daro.
In Sukkur, heavy, moderate and light rain lashed the city and its surrounding areas from Wednesday night till late Thursday evening. The rainfall paralysed the routine life and badly affected business and commercial activities.
In Jacobabad district, rain started at around midnight and continued into Thursday. It was still raining when the last reports came late in the evening. Roads and highways, as well as dwellings in the low-lying areas, were inundated.
In Khairpur district, moderate to light spells of rain hit Kot Diji, Gambat, Thari Mirwah and their adjoining areas.
Moderate spells of rain turned weather in Kandhkot-Kashmore district pleasant but disrupted people’s routine activities.
A goods laden trailer fell into Phulelli Canal of Kotri Barrage at Hyderabad bypass, causing injuries to one person and leading another one to go missing.
According to a Rescue-1122 official, Dilbar Halepoto, the injured man, Dalha Khan, was shifted to the Liaquat University Hospital for treatment and efforts were under way to take out the other person. He is believed to have drowned, the official said.
The trailer, bound for Matiari from Karachi, could not be pulled out from the canal till late in the evening.
In Khairpur, two trailers collided along the nearby section of the National Highway. Five people were reported injured, two of them critically, in the accident. The accident was attributed to brake failure of one of the two vehicles.
The rainfall caused collapse of the electricity network across the affected areas. In Hyderabad, 250 out of 693 feeders tripped. They included the 80 feeding Hyderabad city.
Power supply to almost all areas of Sukkur suspended after all Sepco feeders tripped. The outage continued for about 24 hours, i.e while it rained.
Jacobabad district also experienced a 20-hour power outage while Khairpur and Kandhkot-Kashmore districts endured a 10-hour breakdown.
Larkana Mayor Advocate Anwar Ali Luhar, while visiting rain-hit areas, asked the Sepco officials concerned to ensure restoration of power supply to the city and keep generators operational in the field through mobile units to ensure draining of rainwater.
Electricity in Mirpurkhas went off with the first drop of rain and after a few hours, it continued to play hide and seek till late in the evening.
Similar was the situation witnessed in Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar and Naushahro Feroze districts.
