SWABI: The price of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) has increased by Rs2,000 per 10-kilogramme cylinder over the last month, and the traders haven’t ruled out a further hike in the coming days.
The 10kg LPG cylinder, which was available in the market for Rs3,000 a month ago, now costs Rs5,000, while it’s even more costly in remote areas.
Consumers from villages on the outskirts of the district headquarters said it was becoming difficult for them to afford the climbing LPG prices, further squeezing their financial position.
Ahmad Ali of Swabi city told Dawn that the LPG use had prevented deforestation because it had largely replaced the fuel wood. “Cutting of trees for fuel purposes affects the environment. Availability of LPG at an affordable price is very important to prevent deforestation,” he said.
Traders said that the main reason for the sudden increase in the LPG price was the US-Israel war against Iran, which disrupted the supply chain. They said if the conflict continued, it would lead to further price increases in the coming days.
When contacted, an official of the district administration told Dawn on condition of anonymity that the volatile global energy landscape had impacted the LPG prices locally.
ENMITY CLAIMS LIFE: An old enmity claimed the life of a man in Dagai village of Razaar tehsil on Friday, police and rescue officials.
They identified the deceased as Zahir Khan, 45. The police said he died on the spot after his rivals opened fire on him. A Recuse 1122 team shifted the body to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for autopsy.
