Movies titled The Day That Happened… usually involve destruction and a hero saving the world. In the face of destruction rises a super-hero, who takes humanity to safety. But in The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck step up — in their own chaotic, hilarious way. This full-length animated adventure puts the iconic Looney Tunes duo at the centre of an alien invasion, mixing comedy, confusion and cosmic mayhem. It was difficult to assess who was more of a threat to Earth: the alien or the duo, or both.
The film kicks off with the origin story of Porky and his unpredictable best friend, Daffy. While Daffy’s wild antics often land them in trouble, the two inseparable pals, also known as Bugs Bunny’s buddies, find themselves desperate for money — to repair their house.
Good at doing nothing, they fail to get any job anywhere until ‘work’ finds them. The factory they now work at in is linked to an alien invasion that threatens Earth. Soon, they find themselves in the middle of a ‘saving the Earth’ situation, and for someone who was going to be homeless, comes the situation where the entire planet’s future depends upon. The danger? The alien turns humans into zombies when they chew gum — it looks horrific!
Petunia Pig joins adventurous Daffy and patient Porky, and the trio sets out to save the planet. The Day the Earth Blew Up is more about laughter than destruction. The one hour 31-minute movie has all the elements of Looney Tunes, from aliens to jokes to action: quips, dares, slapstick, one-liners, and ridiculous antics.
The film is directed by Pete Browngardt, who revitalized the franchise five years ago with the acclaimed Looney Tunes Cartoons series. Eric Bauza is the voice of Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, yes, both. The talented voice-over artist is famous for voicing characters like Flash, Mr Freeze, Commissioner Gordon, Bane, Two-Face, and Woody Woodpecker.
The positive aspect of the movie was the importance of teamwork, which can overcome any hurdle, even if one is Daffy or Porky. The movie blends nostalgia with fresh fun. Older fans will enjoy all the little nods to classic Looney Tunes episodes, while younger viewers will laugh at the silly aliens, crazy gadgets, and over-the-top action. It can easily turn you into a life-long Looney Tunes fan, just like the generations before you.
