Govt slammed over surge in street crime

KARACHI: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Monday called the performance of the current caretaker government “no different” from that of the previous government of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as both had failed to curb street crime in Karachi.

In a statement, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said: “There is no big difference between the previous PPP government and the present caretaker regime when it comes to the always rising crime statistics.”

He referred to the officially compiled data which said that 135 innocent citizens lost their lives whereas another 1,150 received bullet injuries during robberies during 2023. Such a “horrible crime rate”, he said, was evident of the incompetency and corruption of the previous and incumbent regimes as well as the police.

“Caretaker regime and the new IG made huge claims, but all in vain,” said Hafiz Naeem.
