27,000 Cholistan farmers get land

LAHORE: The Punjab caretaker government has allocated 344,000 acres of land to 27,000 farmers through balloting.

“Seeing the plight of landless farmers in Cholistan, the government allocated the land through a transparent balloting. The computerized balloting, officiated by caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi signifies a historic step towards empowering the farmers of Cholistan,” a press release said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the balloting ceremony, Mr Naqvi announced the allocation of 12-and-a-half acres of land per person on a lease for five years to 27,000 farmers.

“This landmark decision brings justice to the impoverished farmers spanning three districts – Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur, who have awaited their rightful claims for 45 years,” he said.

He emphasised the transparency in the land allotment process, with session judges, government officials, and various stakeholders playing integral roles. Highlighting the prolonged delay since 1978 in the land allotment process for Cholistan residents, he said this initiative would provide employment opportunities to thousands of Cholistan families.
