PTI condemns ‘inhumane’ behaviour with opposition leader in prison

KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly condemning arrest of Leader of the Opposition Haleem Adil Sheikh and “inhumane behaviour” with him in the prison.

The parliamentary party leader in the Sindh Assembly, Khurrum Sher Zaman, with his fellow legislators filed the resolution in the office of the Sindh Assembly.

Talking to the media, Mr Sher Zaman accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of targeting its leaders, calling it a vendetta of the provincial government.

He alleged that Mr Sheikh was held in a jail barracks where hardened criminals were imprisoned.

“The floods have washed away entire rural Sindh and here our government is busy fixing political scores,” he said, adding: “We don’t want to play politics in this challenging hour and that’s why chose the respectable forum of the parliament to lodge our protest. Haleem Adil Sheikh is seriously ill, but the PPP government, which claims itself champions of human rights, is violating all the rules and defined regulations for a senior parliamentarian.”

The “fake cases” against the opposition leader, he said, were framed under a conspiracy before the crucial local government elections because Mr Sheikh was a strong voice on the problems of Sindh.

He added the people of Sindh, led by PTI, would not stay silent on the “atrocities” committed by the PPP, which has been ruling the province for the past more than 14 years without any break.

“We always talk about justice and merit,” said Mr Sher Zaman, mentioning: “We have always respected judges and courts. We have always appeared before courts whenever we are summoned. And at the same time, we are very much hopeful that the courts would do justice. At this hour, when the party has entered into last phase of its preparation for the upcoming local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad, we see it a deliberate move of the Sindh government to demoralise and harass our workers and leaders.”
