Two arrested over Kohistan honour killing

MANSEHRA: The Lower Kohistan police have arrested two men over an honour killing and promised the early arrest of two others, including the prime accused.

District police officer Zulfiqar Khan Jadoon told Dawn on Monday that a local woman was killed in Pattan tehsil by her husband in the name of honour.

He said the police handed over the woman to his father after recovery from kidnappers earlier this year, and her husband, Mohammad Banaras, was allowed to take her home. She was killed afterwards.

“We have arrested two of the four accused and hope to nab the main accused and another accused in a few days,” he said.

Earlier, the woman’s father, Aurangzeb, told reporters that his daughter was killed by her husband with the help of three family members in Bectoki Simo Dera area of Pattan tehsil, while her body was thrown down the mountain.

He insisted that his daughter got married two years ago and was kidnapped by two young men in Lower Kohistan district afterwards.

The resident added that the woman was axed to death by her husband lately.

He said his son-in-law used to torture his wife.

“We recovered the body with the help of police last week and buried it on the outskirts of Mansehra city,” he said.

Aurangzeb said the main accused was at large and was pressuring him and his family to withdraw the FIR against him and accomplices. He said a jirga, which was held in Lower Kohistan following the kidnapping of his daughter, had declared her pervert (choar) under the local tradition, and ordered her killing. The resident demanded the arrest of the main accused and accomplices for exemplary punishment.

FINED: The traffic police have fined dozens of drivers for violating traffic laws in Oghi area here on Monday.

Traffic wardens led by Rafaqat Ali and Bashir Khan intercepted vehicles and fined drivers over tainted glasses and pressure horns. They also imposed fine on motorcyclists not wearing helmets, as well as underage bikers, who warned about the seizure of motorcycles in case of putting them on the road again.
