Two US soldiers killed in Kabul

WASHINGTON: Two US Army soldiers were killed on Monday when their vehicle was struck by a homemade bomb in the Afghan capital Kabul, defense officials said.

One of the troops was a non-commissioned officer and the second was an enlisted soldier, two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. There were also civilian casualties in the assault but there were no further details available.

The bombing came after insurgents staged a horrific suicide attack on Sunday in the eastern province of Paktika, killing 57 people at a volleyball match.

The assault on Sunday coincided with the lower of house of parliament approving agreements that will allow 12,500 Nato troops, including more than 9,000 Americans, to remain in the country next year.

More than 2,200 American troops have been killed in the 13-year-old war, according to the Pentagon.
