ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party on Thursday submitted an adjournment motion to the National Assembly Secretariat, seeking a debate on ongoing clashes between security forces of India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary (WB) near Sialkot.

The motion has been submitted by MNAs Shazia Marri, Imran Laghari, Dr Nafisa Shah, Aijaz Jakhrani and Mir Amir Khan Magsi.

Through the motion, a copy of which was released to the media by the opposition leader, the PPP legislators have sought adjournment of regular proceedings of the house “to discuss the urgent and serious matter of continuous breach” of LoC and WB by the Indian security forces.

According to the motion, the shelling and firing by the Indian forces has resulted in more than 12 casualties as well as injuries to many Pakistanis over the past few days. “It is escalating tension between the two neighbouring countries and if the situation remains the same, it may lead to worsening of ties between them.”

Tension between the two countries escalated during Eid holidays as clashes along the LoC and the WB left about a dozen people dead on the Pakistani side.

The clashes that started on Sunday in the Jandrot sector spread to several other sectors along the LoC and WB by Wednesday evening and sporadic exchanges of fire were taking place.

The intensity of skirmishes is said to be unprecedented in nature.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has already convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council on Friday in view of unprovoked shelling and firing by Indian forces.

The meeting to be chaired by the prime minister will be attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Pervez Rashid, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, three services chiefs and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The last NSC meeting was held in August on Operation Zarb-i-Azb being conducted in North Waziristan Agency.
