KARACHI, April 26: A meeting of the University of Karachi syndicate could not be held as some of its ex-officio and nominated members failed to turn up.

Sources in the campus, said that the syndicate meeting, which was to discuss the cases of promotions and appointments of teachers as well, could not be held due to quorum shortage. Besides the Vice chancellor, a representative from the Higher Education Commission and six members elected from varsity teachers constituencies, were available for the meeting.

While, four of the nominees of the government had already expressed their inability to attend the meeting for different reasons, “we needed only one member and waited for any of the remaining members for at least one hour, but to no avail,” a senior official of the university said.

Meanwhile, in a letter to the vice chancellor, six of the teachers, who were members of the syndicate and reported for Saturday’s meeting, expressed their dismay over quorum shortage.

Referring to not showing up of the nominated members, the KU teachers said that the attitude was painful, particularly in a situation when the matters regarding appointments of teachers and chairpersons and recommendations of varsity’s academic council, were pending for finalization, reportedly, for the last six months.
