Water shortage in Haripur villages

Published April 24, 2003

HARIPUR, April 23: Several villages in district Haripur have been experiencing shortage of potable water for the last several days Dawn has learnt.

According to Akhtar Zaman, a member of the local council, the residents of villages Kotla and Pirsohawa were experiencing sever water shortage as the springs in the area were fast drying up in the lush green tourists-friendly valley skirting Islamabad.

The residents of these villages have to fetch water from far off places or buy it from the CDA tankers for Rs1,000 per tanker.

These skirting villages of district Haripur, situated at walking distance from the federal Capital, had always been popular with nature-loving residents of the twin cities.

But due to a lack of attention both from the district administration of Haripur and the CDA these areas had always remained neglected.

The people of these areas which were usually thronged by the VIPs and picnickers particularly during the summer months, according to Mr Zaman, were deprived of basic facilities like potable water, road etc.

He demanded of the district government to provide water and start work on development schemes in the area on war footing.
