KARACHI, April 22: Sindh Chief Minister Sardar Ali Mohammad Khan Mahar has expressed his concern over the condition of jails in the province and has directed the Home Department officials to provide the prisoners with all the facilities in accordance with the jail manual.
He said this during a briefing by the Home Department at the New Sindh Secretariat on Tuesday.
He said that in the jails the prisoners be provided proper food, clean water and medical care.
He also said that the in time production of under-trial prisoners in the courts be ensured.
The CM also directed the officials concerned to provide gas connection to the women jail in Larkana, besides making arrangements for the provision of doctor and for the education of children there.
He said that in the districts where the public safety committees had not been formed yet the process be completed at the earliest, so that the complaints of the people against the police be addressed.
Mr Mahar urged the committee formed for reformation of jails to submit its recommendations within 15 days.
He directed that the performance of the police be improved.
The CM said that soon a meeting would be convened regarding the condition of jails, to solve their problems and to finalize measures to improve the condition of prisons.
He also directed that against the posts of those policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty, the recruitment of ASIs be made soon.
He also directed that the residential quarters for the staff of the Dadu, Shikarpur and Badin jails and barracks for the prisoners be completed soon.
Home Minister, Syed Sardar Ahmed, said on the occasion that for improvement in jails, committees on provincial and district levels would soon submit their recommendations.
The Chief Secretary, KB Rind, called for devising a strategy for the betterment of the Home Department and the police through better coordination.
He said that a cell would be set up in collaboration with the National Aliens Registration Authority (NARA).
Home Secretary, S Anwarul Haq, told the meeting that the budget of the Home Department was Rs7.92 billion.
He claimed that the record of all the prisoners in the Sindh jails had been computerized.
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS: There are over three million illegal immigrants living in Sindh and these include about half a million Afghan refugees.
This was stated by the Sindh Chief Secretary KB Rind at a briefing of the Sindh Home Department here on Tuesday.
He pointed out that many of the foreigners were living there because they did not have money to return to their countries.
It was decided at the meeting that the government would bear the travel expenses of such persons so that they could return to their respective countries.
Mr Rind said that efforts would also be made to seek cooperation of the UNHCR and organizations of other countries in this respect.
He directed the Home Department to resolve the problem of illegal immigrants in the province, as various serious problems were emerging because of them.
Home Secretary, S Anwarul Haq, informed the meeting that the public safety committees had been set up in eight districts of the province so far.—APP
