RAWALPINDI, April 21: Teachers on Monday announced postponement of their protest movement against the privatization of educational institutions after holding negotiations with the Punjab government.

The representative of Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association, Mohammad Ilyas Qureshi, in a Press release on Monday evening, said the government had agreed to withdraw denationalization plan and reinstate the sacked teachers. He said Rs75 million grant would be provided for the teachers foundation and all the due promotions would be announced within three months.

He said the government had also agreed to resolve the board of governors issue according to Justice Ijaz Nisar Commission.

Earlier, the teachers and students of Gordon College on Monday staged a protest demonstration against the privatization plan of educational institutions.

About 80 students and some teachers participated in the protest. The teachers also partially boycotted the classes.

The representatives of teachers and students spoke against the denationalization policy and said the plan, if implemented, would deprive the students of opportunities to attain quality education.

The vice-president of Islami Jamiat Talaba, Nasrullah Khan, said the students body would stage a sit-in front of the Parliament House on May 3, if the demands were not accepted. He termed the privatization move an anti-students decision and called for its withdrawal.

The IJT leader also condemned the attacks on Jamiat activists in Karachi. He said scores of activists were subjected to harassment and torture by the activists of a political party.
