KARACHI, April 21: City people experiencing the current spell of heat owing to rising temperatures have been advised to adopt certain precautions to avoid heatstroke.

Doctors said here on Monday that the extreme weather conditions made necessary for people, particularly those required to go outdoors during day time, to ensure that their heads were properly covered and they were wearing loose and light coloured clothes, which might be soft also, preferably in cotton material.

Exposure to scorching sun causing severe perspiration also made important that maximum liquid in the form of water and juice was consumed to avoid dehydration, they said.

For those who may have been inflicted with sunstroke, it was suggested that they, in case get unconscious, must be immediately brought to a shaded and cool place and their head immediately be soaked with cold water or an ice cap be kept on their head.

Gentle handling of such victims was strongly advised. It was also suggested that they be given some time to gain consciousness, and efforts be made to bring down their temperature.

It was also advised that the patient be taken to a qualified doctor. Any medication, however, would be unadvisable except that recommended by the doctor following the examination of the affected person.—APP
