BAHAWALPUR, April 18: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has sanctioned a grant of Rs4.8 million for the treatment of a woman who was burnt, along with her sister, by her husband in Ahmadpur East two and a half months ago.

Shaheena and her sister Sakina were burnt when the former’s husband Zahid Nawaz threw acid on them.

PML-Q MPA Mohtarma Sitara Fayyaz on Friday presented a cheque for Rs350,000 on behalf of the chief minister for the victims’ subsistence. She said 135,000 was being spent out of Zakat, ushr and Baitul Mal fund for the treatment of the sisters. Shaheena would be sent to London soon while Sakina would be treated at Rawalpindi’s Combined Military Hospital, she added.

Bahawalpur range DIG Pervez Akbar Lodhi said the police had registered a case against the accused, who was at large.

The accused had reportedly squandered all his money in gambling. To meet his requirements, he used to demand money from his wife who quarrelled with him.
