Asim’s century to no avail

KARACHI, Dec 6: A supeb 111 by burly Asim Rizvi was to no avail, as his team Aftab Memorial suffered a six-wicket defeat against Malir Gymkhana, in the 14th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan cricket tournament played Thursday at the Karachi Gymkhana ground.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Aftab Memorial batsmen except for Asim Rizvi and to a certain extent Noman Ikram (22), were all at sea against the bowling of Malir Gymkhana and were bundled out for only 162 runs in 24.5 overs.

So disgraceful was the performance put up by the Aftab Memorial batsmen that apart from Asim’s 111 and Noman’s 22 along with the 21 extras, amounted to 154 runs, the rest of the other nine batsmen could only manage eight measly runs. In fact seven batsmen in the side failed to open their account. Ali Zafar had figures of (2-17) and Shoukat Hussain (2-34). All seven bowlers used by Malir Gymkhana picked up a wicket.

This must indeed be some kind of new record in top club cricket, with seven ducks in the side.

Needing 163 runs for victory, Khurram Mansoor led the onslaught, flaying the rival bowling to all parts of the wicket while scoring 67 runs off only 28 deliveries, which contained nine boundaries and two sixes. Maniyal Hussain weighed in with 42 unbeaten runs and Aamir Hanif scored 21. Farhan Aslam was the most successful bowler for Aftab Memorial, taking (3-35) in his five over spell.
