ISLAMABAD, April 16: Parliamentary party leader of PML-N, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, has said that by opposing the Legal Framework Order, the joint opposition was fighting for the revival of a sovereign parliament and the establishment of genuine democratic system in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Hashmi said those who termed the opposition’s anti-LFO struggle an attempt to get parliament dissolved lacked political wisdom.

“The present constitutional crisis is deepening with every passing day, but Gen Musharraf and his supporters are making attempts to disfigure the Constitution by incorporating the LFO in it.”

The PML-N leader said the opposition was not creating hurdles in the smooth functioning of parliament, but it was the government that was trying to undermine the supremacy of parliament.

Charges against the opposition were being levelled only to build pressure on the opposition to accept the LFO.

The present rulers must know that Pakistan was not the feifdom of any individual, the PML-N leader said, adding that Gen Musharraf and his colleagues were damaging democratic institutions of the state by establishing a rubber-stamp parliament to “legitimise” all the illegal steps taken after October 12, 1999.

Makhdoom Javed Hashmi said persons who justified the LFO unfortunately lacked ability to judge the importance of an independent parliament and the sanctity of the constitution.
