LARKANA, Sept 6 Irked by poor relief activities by government agencies, flood survivors resorted to holding protests in different cities of Sindh on Monday.

More than 100 displaced people accommodated in different relief camps demonstrated at the main gate of Jinnah Bagh. They burnt tyres and forced shopkeepers to close their business here on Monday. They also burnt flag of the Pakistan People's Party and blocked traffic.

Qutub Luhar, Mehar Bozdar, Shahban Chandio and others living in the relief camps of Government Pilot Secondary School and Municipal Stadium alleged that the administration was providing them substandard food and that too in late hours. Their camps were without proper medical facilities, they said.

They said that in-charges of different relief camps had collected their CNICs for financial assistance, but kept them on false hopes. It was just cheating, they said.

Later, police dispersed them.

In Sukkur, scores of flood-affected persons held a demonstration and staged a sit-in near the new bus terminal.

Men, women and children were protesting against short supply of relief goods.

A demonstration was held outside the government degree college where a relief camp has been set up.

Protesters gathered outside the college, shouting slogans against the government. They said the government was not looking after them properly.

Talking to reporters, they said that the government of Sindh had announced Rs5,000 for every flood-affected family for Eidul Fitr, which was not being given to them.

They demanded the cash relief before Eid.

Meanwhile, flood survivors living in the camps near the new bus terminal held a demonstration and staged a sit-in at the Sukkur-Shikarpur road for about three hours, suspending vehicular traffic between Sukkur and Shikarpur.

Talking to journalists, they blamed the district government for shortage of food supplies. For many days, they had been getting insufficient food, due to which their children often remained hungry. They were demanding adequate supply of ration to them, besides cash supplement for the Eid.

When contacted, Sukkur DCO Inamullah Dharejo refuted the claims of flood-affected people, saying that they were being provided cooked meal twice a day in ample quantity.

Cash supplement would be given to them when the Sindh government provided the amount to the district administration, he said.

In Khairpur, IDPs held a demonstration on old the National Highway and blocked the road near Bhurgari regulator. The traffic via the old highway remained suspended for quite some time.

They raised slogans against non-supply of food to them and said that they were passing hard times but no one was listening to them. They said that their families were not getting food and other facilities.

When contacted, EDO revenue and focal person for flood situation Umer Farooque Bullo said that DDO of revenue and the Mukhtiarkar concerned met the protesting IDPs and assured them of providing all facilities.

He added that IDPs keep coming from other areas and they faced some problems. He said that the district administration had also started registration of IDPs and they were being given ration and other facilities accordingly.
