PIA earns over Rs2bn

LAHORE, April 9: The PIA has managed to reduce its accumulated losses by around 20 per cent and earned profit of Rs2.11 billion during the last calendar year.

It is learnt that PIA’s earning per share was Rs4.10 in year 2002 as compared to the loss per share of Rs5.91 in year 2001.

PIA officials claim that Lahore region’s passenger performance sales last year increased by 6.25 per cent against the sales recorded in year 2001.

Similarly, the introduction of Lahore region’s passenger performance sales in year 2002 also increased the selling base of PIA. This enabled and improved securing of business as passenger contact became more and more effective and efficient, the officials said.

They said the PIA management led by chairman Ahmad Saeed also gave preference to cargo high yield and high density. They said the PIA also explored every agent and exporter besides further organizing the space variability. Misplacement, delay and off loading of shipment was controlled and minimized along with constant contact with clients.

The officials said the excess baggage revenue was also increased by 17 per cent last year against year 2001 despite the fact that free baggage allowance was increased from 20kgs to 30kgs per passenger for all international destinations.

They said the Umra season, despite changes in Saudi government laws, was handled efficiently and contributed towards the overall growth in revenues than last year.

The officials said the turn around in PIA was made possible by putting PIA’s own house in order, adopting a concept of decentralization in marketing, restructuring of marketing targets and plans by the management.
