KARACHI, May 19 Unseeded Asif Khan of NWFP sprang the first surprise when he removed second seed Naveed Alam of Sindh in straight sets to make it to the boys' under-19 quarter-finals in the Roshan Khan Junior Open squash championship here on Monday.

Asif took just 31 minutes on the court to post 9-4, 9-0, 9-6 victory to send his opponent packing at the PN Roshan Khan-Jahangir Khan Squash Complex.

Commander Karachi Rear Admiral Bakhtiar Mohsin watched the entire match after formally declaring the main round open. Also present on the occasion was squash legend Jahangir Khan, who has instituted the event in memory of his deceased father.

Punjab's Farhan Zaman, who represented the country at British Junior Open squash championship earlier this year, also created quite a stir when he toppled fourth seed Tahir Iqbal of NWFP 9-7, 9-1, 9-1 in 21 minutes.

Top seed Shoaib Hassan from Punjab, the losing quarter-finalist of British Junior Open squash this year, eased to the next round with an emphatic 9-4, 9-0, 3-9, 9-1 victory over Owais Rahim, also from Punjab.

Though unseeded, Punjab's Hamza Bokhari made unceremonious first round exit in boys' under-17 when he went down to PAF's Waqas Mehboob, the third seed, in a gruelling five-set encounter that lasted 92 minutes.

Waqas was home 5-9, 9-1, 9-4, 7-9, 9-4 against Hamza who also represented the country at British Junior competition.

Meanwhile, three players from Sindh and one from Punjab were through to the girls' under-15 quarter-finals after winning their matches. They joined top four seeds who got first round bye.
