DADU, March 29: The small growers from the Sehwan and Kotri talukas have threatened to launch a campaign against the on-going construction of the Right Bank Outfall Drain.
At a rally held at the site of the RBOD the other day, the protesters urged the authorities to shift the drain near the western side of the Kotri-Sehwan railway line otherwise it would render thousands of acres of agricultural land uncultivable.
The development projects wing of the irrigation department was constructing the RBOD in the Kutcha area from the Karampur village in Sehwan taluka to the sea along the Indus River to drain the brackish water of the MNV Drain to save Lake Manchhar.
It has further been learnt that the officials of the irrigation department had not paid full compensation to landowners in both of the talukas.
MNA Abdul Ghani Talpur, district Nazim Malik Asad Sikandar and general secretary, PONM, Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah were prominent among those who attended the rally.
They said that the outlet for brackish water would destroy 33 per cent of agricultural land between Lakha and Amri.
They also urged the authorities to reduce the drain’s width from 520 feet to 250 feet.
MPA from Thana Bula Khan Syed Asif Ali Shah said that he would raise the issue in the provincial assembly while MPA from Kotri Preen Shoro threatened to launch a drive against the RBOD’s construction.
QUACKS: The district and sessions judge, Hassan Feroze, has directed the DPO to register cases against quacks in the district.
He was speaking at a meeting of the Human Rights Board at his office on Saturday.
Mr Feroze, who is the director the board, also directed the DPO to raid clinics, basic health units and health centres and register cases against those doctors who were prescribing veterinary medicines to people and reusing syringes.
DEMO: Over 200 people staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Saturday against the murder of a teacher.
The teacher, Ali Mardan Chandio, was killed 18 days back.
The protesters demanded arrest of the killers.
Later, they observed token hunger strike.
