Musharraf admits mistakes

Published September 27, 2009

IN a lecture delivered by former president Musharraf at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, he admitted the mistake of sacking the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, causing a state of chaos.

This game of power at the cost of people's sufferings, viz. poverty, lawlessness, corruption and terrorism, is not new in Pakistan's history.

Benazir Bhutto was sacked twice in her two terms of governance once by ex-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and in the second term by the then President Farooq Leghari; and Nawaz Sharif by Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Musharraf, which paved the way towards mid-term elections again and again; resulting in economic and social crisis.

Instead of redressing the grievances of the people, the rulers played the game of revenge and power politics which made the country the most dangerous place on earth, resulting in affected mothers, fathers selling their children, people compelled on selling their organs, incessant suicide bombings, and poverty that led the country to be begging to the world for finances.

The issue of references against the CJ could have been resolved through table talks and negotiations, instead of sacking the chief justice that resulted in clashes between the judiciary and the government, killing scores of people in clashes and leaving the state of economy in tatters.
