GUJRANWALA, March 7: The National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) started regulating traffic on Kharian-Shahdara (Lahore) and Okara-Bahawalpur sections of the GT Road on Friday.
Patrolling NH&MP officials distributed pamphlets and brochures among road-users and appealed to the latter to cooperate with them in revamping the traffic system.
NH&MP SSP Shariq Jamal reviewed the patrolling of Grand Trunk Road in Gujrat and Gujranwala districts.
He pointed out that NH&MP staff would continue training drivers in use of road till the end of this month. There would be no challan during this period, he added.
He said that Kharian-Shahdara section had been divided into four beats, each of which would be supervised by a DSP.
He said that the GT Road was being repaired from Kharian to Shahdara and lanes being marked for the guidance of drivers. The work would be completed by the end of current month.
He said the drivers would be heavily fined on violation of traffic rules from April 1.
Nearly 300km Okara-Bahawalpur section has been divided into six beats, each of which is to be supervised by a chief patrolling officer who will have a fleet of four wireless and speed radar-fitted vehicles at his disposal.
DECEASED ELITE COPS: Provincial food minister Chaudhry Mohammad Iqbal visited the houses of those three Elite Force officials who were killed in an encounter with criminals in Khiali along with three outlaws and an innocent woman. He conveyed the condolences of the chief minister to the grieved families.
He announced that the Punjab government would give Rs300,000 in compensation to each family besides providing employment to children and relatives of the deceased in the police department.
District Police Officer Saud Aziz announced on the occasion that employees of the police department would give their one-day salary to heirs of the deceased Elite Force ASI Ehsan Ullah and constables Malik Tahir Younas and Mohammad Ramzan.
BLACK DAY: The district bar association will observe a black day on Saturday (today) against the Legal Framework Order (LFO) and boycott court proceedings for one-hour from 11am to 12 noon.
This was stated by bar president Ilyas Rehan and secretary Muhammad Saeed Bhutta in a press release issued here on Friday.
They said the black day was being observed on the appeal of lawyers’ convention of the Pakistan Bar Council. Lawyers would also wear black armbands in protest, they said.
Lawyers would continue their struggle against the anti-constitutional and anti-democratic LFO as it gave sweeping powers to the president, they added.
RALLY: Activists of various religious parties and student organizations took out a peace rally here on Friday.
The protesters called for the world powers to block the US path of war by using veto power in the Security Council.
They gathered outside Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia, Model Town, after juma prayers and later paraded on the Grand Trunk Road under the leadership of Sahibzada Rafiq Ahmad Mujaddadi. The rally terminated at Sheranwala Bagh. Carrying banners and placards, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the US.
The peace rally was organized by the Alami Idara Tanzimul Islam while activists of Jamaat Ahle Sunnah, Sunni Tehrik, Sunni Force and Anjuman Talaba Islam participated in it.
ARRESTED: At least 50 people were arrested on the charge of violating a pillion riding ban besides impounding their motorcycles.
DPO Saud Aziz said here on Friday that 20 people were arrested by the City police, 10 each by Naushera Virkan and Wazirabad and five each by Ghakkhar and Kamoki police.
