LAHORE, March 3: The 69th Punjab Games started at 18 different centres after a colourful opening ceremony at the newly built Punjab Stadium in Nishtar Park on Monday.

Punjab chief minister, Chaudhary Pervez Elahi, inaugurated the Games after national athlete, Shahzad Ramzan took oath on behalf of all participants that they would maintain discipline during the event.

The chief minister announced that a modernised indoor gymnasium hall would be built at Nishter Park besides a swimming pool and a hostel for girls.

Earlier, International boxer Arshad Javed Qureshi, Asian title holder wrestler, Abdul Majeed Maroowala and Olympian weightlifter, Muhammad Azam took the round of the stadium with the Punjab Olympic torch which was later lit by another athlete Chaudhary Muhammad Siddique.

School children presented colourful programmes during the opening ceremony. National songs were also played.

BOXING

Fifteen bouts were decided.

FOOTBALL

Lahore, Faisalabad, Muzzafargarh and Sargodha reached semifinals of the football competition.

Muzzafargarh beat Multan 4-3 on penalty kicks, Sargodha defeated Sialkot on penalty shootout 4-2, Faisalabad routed Bahawalpur 4-1, Lahore overpowered Attock 5-3. Faisalabad meet Sargodha, while Muzzafargarh play Lahore in last four.

HANDBALL

Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakar, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad qualified for the semifnals of the handball championship.

Dera Ghazi Khan beat Gujranwala 31-28 in extra time. In the regulation time, both the teams were tied at 25-25.

Bhakhar outclassed Multan by 12-7, Bahawalpur outplayed Sargodha 19-14, Faisalabad defeated Lahore 20-15.

BASEBALL

Vehari, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi marched into the semifinals of baseball championship.

Vehari defeated Gujranwala by 10 runs to nine, Lahore registered a thumping 15-1 win over Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan got the better of Mianwali 12-2, and Rawalpindi struggled to beat Faisalabad 9-8.

TAEKWONDO

Tayyab Raza of Lahore and Imran Bhatti emerged winners in finweight and featherweight taekwondo contest.

Results:

Finweight: Tayyab Raza (Lahore), Mohammad Fayyaz (Multan), Mohammad Javed (Bahawalpur).

Featherweight: Imran Bhatti (Multan), Mohammad Iqbal (Lahore), Aman Yasin (Bahawalnagar).

CYCLING

Lahore with two golds medals, two silver and one bronze dominated the first day Cycling Championship at the National Velodrome.

Results:

MEN: 10Kms Time Trial: Nazakat  Ali (Lahore) one min 26.50 secs, Waheed (Rawalpindi), Arshad (Rahimyar Khan), Khalid (Faisalabad), Imran (Sialkot), Arif (Lahore).

Four Kms Individual Pursuit: Arshad (Rahimyar Khan) six min 5.79 secs; Waheed (Rawalpindi), Nabeel (Lahore), Adeel (Sialkot), Tariq (Lahore), Fazal (Rawalpindi).

WOMEN: One Kms Time Trial: Aisha (Lahore) one min 51.3 secs, Binish (Lahore), Sameer (Sheikhupura), Sadia (Sahiwal), Aqsa (Faisalabad), Atia (Sahiwal).

Two Kms Individual Pursuit: Saira (Sahiwal) three min 42.4 secs, Aisha (Lahore), Binish (Lahore), Sadia (Sahiwal), Naureen (Faisalabad), Aqsa (Faisalabad).

KABADDI

Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Rahimyar Khan and Toba Tek Singh reserved their berths in the semifinals of Kabaddi Championship at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex.

Results: Rahimyar Khan beat Lahore by 61 points to 51.

Sahiwal outplayed Sahiwal by 49 points to 28.

Toba Tek Singh beat Sargodha 48-25.

Faisalabad got walk over against Sahiwal.

Semifinals: Faisalabad vs Sahiwal; Rahimyar Khan vs Toba Tek Singh.

WUSHU

Contests in five different categories were held on first day.

Results: Tau-shu: Imran Rasool (Gujrat), Gulfam Ghafoor (Gujranwala), Nisar Ahmad (Narowal).

Chung-chuan: Shakarullah Khan (Lahore), Andleeb (Gujrat), Sajawal Haq (Narowal), Nauman Khaliq (Rawalpindi).

Chiang-shu: Taimur Ali (Lahore), Muhammad Nadeem (Gujrat), Shahroaz (Hafizabad).

Nan-Chuan: Shahzeb ali (Gujrat), Irfan Ghafoor (Gujranwala), Hammad Ashfaq (Lahore).
