HYDERABAD, Feb 22: Sindhi Language Authority chairman Dr Qasim Bughio has said that amongst the regional languages of Pakistan, Sindhi is the only language which has produced a voluminous body of literature.

However, he said, the tragedy of Sindhi language was the low literacy rate among the Sindhi-speaking people, which was between 15 to 20 per cent.

He was speaking at a gathering organized by the Best Friends Association in Tando Mohammad Khan on Friday to mark the International Day of Mother Tongue.

Speaking on the occasion, columnist Javed Qazi said that Sindhi language was being ignored by the government and added that similar treatment was being meted out to other regional languages.

He urged the people to follow the message of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai and fight against the savage custom of Karo-Kari.

He said it was high time that the people stopped supporting jirga system and began respecting women.

Sindh National Council leader Hussain Bukhsh Thebo said that the so-called leaders, who had become a salable commodity, should be rejected as they were incapable of serving the cause of Sindh.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Dr Dodo Maheri, Prof Peeral Piyasi, Zulfiqar Halepoto and Qasim Patoli.

MEDICAL CAMP: The Lakhani Memon Foundation will hold a free medical camp in Umerkot, Tharparkar district, on Feb 23, 24 and 25.
