LAHORE, Feb 22: Punjab Health Minister Dr Tahir Ali Javed has said the government will reorganize the public healthcare system to the benefit of the common man.

Speaking at a national symposium on birth asphyxia (breathing problem) at Postgraduate Medical Institute on Saturday, he said the incidence of birth asphyxia must be checked by ensuring availability of medical facilities and adopting protective measures.

He said the government would utilize all available resources to provide better health facilities to mothers and infants in remote areas to save infants from breathing problems. He said the infant patients, if survive, suffer from heart, lungs and kidney diseases.

He stressed that doctors, para-medical staff and midwives should create awareness among mothers about the ailment because a majority of people were not aware of the treatment and the protective measures. He also suggested holding of symposiums, refresher courses and training for doctors and para-medical staff, especially those posted in small cities and at rural health centres.
