Dear Mr. Rehman Malik,
I recently found out that you have decided to take action (aka, block, ban and forget) against blasphemous content on the internet.
Let me take this opportunity to tell you that I am extremely delighted at this announcement.
In fact, I am so overwhelmed by the idea that I have decided to write this letter of appreciation and to help you filter content (that needs to be censored immediately).Let me first define blasphemy (since confusion is rampant) and allow me to restate this: nothing would disappoint the Prophet (PBUH) more than violence being justified in his name; nothing is more blasphemous than using Islam as a tool to justify violence.
Therefore Mr. Malik, the following recommendations have been made in this light.
Ansar-Al-Mujahideen: The possibilities with this one are endless, from videos, forums to press releases for ‘Mujahideen,” this one has it all. Must read the newest thread titled, “claiming responsibility for kidnapping two French citizens and exposing the stupidity of the French.” I rest my case.
Haq Chal Yaar: The website promotes hate speech against Shias and the Ahmadis. It also goes on to claim (http://www.kr-hcy.com/shia/kufr.shtml) that Shias are non-Muslims, urging people to fight the Shia Fitna. The forum concludes that anyone who disagrees with them “has to suffer with the words of Kafir/Infidel.” In the presence of muftis and a federal Shariah court this should at least qualify for contempt of court if not blasphemy.
Muslaman Bachay: A magazine run by Jaish-e-Muhammad (a banned outfit). The site features an art gallery with drawings from children. Different from your usual drawings, these are portraits of suicide bombers, guns, swords and such. You get my point, don’t you?
These are just few examples of terrorist websites that perpetuate hate, discrimination and promote violence, that are accessible throughout Pakistan. To be more accurate, according to the 2006 statistics there around 4,500 extremist websites, most of which are accessible in Pakistan.
Child porn: A simple Google search is self-explanatory.
Please note that since May 2010, over 1,200 websites have been blocked, without any prior warning or an explanation or notice regarding the duration of the ban. This appears to be an honest mistake, because child porn and terrorist websites continue to be accessible throughout Pakistan (blasphemy of the utmost level). I hope that you will take notice and assure a crackdown on all sites mentioned above. After all, this is Islamic Republic of Pakistan and we must ensure that even our virtual world is secure from all forms of blasphemous content.
Last, but not the least, since you are well-known for making honest mistakes please avoid us all the embarrassment and not block Facebook, YouTube and Twitter this time around? After all, they have already proven their piety in front of the Lahore High Court.

Unfortunately we try to find something to criticise others to trying to cover up their own faults instead of changing with the times. It is time we try to rectify what is wrong with our society instead of pointing to others and accuse them of doing something like Sati, which is outlawed in India and is not practised by Hindus anymore. When will we learn to change some of our bad laws and practises such as opression of women and teaching hatred towards minorities?

Very well said Mustfa Bhai. The tormentors of Pakistan are the half-baked Mullahs, who have hypnotized innocent minds to such an extent that they move around as zombies in search of Janat at any cost. I have no solutions for redemption of Pakistan from Mullahgiri but I am sure of one thing: what cannot change by evolution, will change by revolution. The cost will be heavy but the result will be a new beginning. When, where or how this change will occur, no one can predict. We must remember that freedom of thought cannot be encased by faith. Humanity cannnot progress with captive thinking.
Sana Saleem is a courageous young lady and perhaps a small beacon in an otherwise dark tunnel. Pray she does not fall victim to another Quadri.

Nasir Bhai, I was in a church many years ago when an old lady approached the priest for giving last communion to his daughter who was seriously ill and about to pass away. The priest declined saying the girl had not led a pious life and therefore not worthy of last communion. Another gentleman standing nearby heard priest's comment and said: "Father, you have no business to be judgemental. It is for God to judge the conduct of his followers and He alone judges. You do your duty of helping the girl pass on into the Kingdom of God."
That, Nasir Bhai, I feel is the role of Priests, Mullahs, Lamas, Pundits and other so called self appointed "representatives" of God on Earth. Show the way and not drag them through it. We mortals have no right to judge the deeds or conduct of anyone. If you have faith in Allah or Creator, leave it to Him to take care of aberrations against Him.

Most of the blind-faith practices are added by men and culture. Quran represents a common sense religion. Suppression of an entire half of God's creation is not common sense. Interestingly, this it is not just Islam's teachings that have been manipulated by men, so have all other religions. The difference is that some societies have woken up to reality. Muslim world will also figure it out - but we have to ask first...would God want us to be this blind?

"Extra long" is actually not limited to burqa, it can be associated with any other piece of clothing like sarees, gowns etc. Also, I have seen many fall without wearing a burqa.

My good friends, I admired Pakistani people, being a foreigner living among you. I wonder how much pain for senseless violence, hunger for financial crunch or lack of hope can you take anymore... I have seen nations in general revolt for less than what we are seeing here, Armies taking control to ensure the citizen of the basic human rights... But the patience (or servile attitude??!!)of Pakistani people seems to have no limits. I congratulate you for the article. Brave and straight to the point. When the simple citizen identifies the corrupt political class and the religious extremism as the cancers that are destroying this country, we will see much blood... but a new Pakistan will be born. I think this is a part of the process of this Nation which we cannot avoid. Wish the critical media would do more to reach out to those who cannot read and write to start forming the conscience of a new beginning. Happy Week to everybody!

Dear Sana, need not to repeat, it is a good blog. I'm not at all opposing your views and just giving what my opinion is.
We could block all the sites, okay, good step, but what is needed is "the sense" from inside. Like, once in my accountancy school, admin. decided to make uniforms compulsory to avoid very open dressings. Next week pupils came with uniform wearing but you know what? Girls were wearing even pathetic and shameful, yes, literally shameful sort of shirts and pajamas.
the point that I'm trying to make is just strictly implementing (blocking sites as you are saying) a decision is not the only solution but to correct our thinking within is.
Unfortunately, as a nation we are in a very sick habit of believing that whatever we know, is 100% accurate and even worse, we don't feel a bit of need to rectify or search for another angle of the issue. I'm sure many of you must have experienced this thing after brutal assassination of Salman Taseer. And that could really make you people understand meticulously what I mean.

Neither am in a support of any of them but as a nation we never look into our selves to evaluate our character and deeds. No doubt if our leaders are worse than us because they have also been selected from the same nation. Though we might have rote learned all the Quranic verses yet we all are no less than any corrupt politician.. plz at least start thinking to rectify yourselves people and stop criticizing others either your neighbor or some honorable politician, it's a great irony of fate for us a nation. THREE RULES FOR WOMEN DRESS CODE IN ISLAM
THE BEST GARMENT, FIRST RULE :
[7:26] "O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of GOD's signs, that they may take heed."
This is the BASIC rule of DRESS CODE in the Quran. This is the first rule in WOMEN DRESS CODE in Islam
SECOND RULE, COVER YOUR BOSOMS:
The second rule can be found in 24:31:
"And tell the believing women to subdue their eyes, and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary. They shall cover their chests, (with their Khimar) and shall not relax this code in the presence of other than their husbands, their fathers, the fathers of their husbands, their sons, the sons of their husbands, their brothers, the sons of their brothers, the sons of their sisters, other women, the male servants or employees whose sexual drive has been nullified, or the children who have not reached puberty. They shall not strike their feet when they walk in order to shake and reveal certain details of their bodies. All of you shall repent to GOD, O you believers, that you may succeed."
THIRD is in 33:59:
"O prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the wives of the believers that they shall LENGTHEN their garments. Thus, they will be recognized and avoid being insulted. God is Forgiver, Most Merciful." 33:59

Please stick on to the contemporary topics, Sati was a tradition which was abolished long back.If you think that it is still being practiced somewhere, you're grossly mistaken.
I do agree that there are some mistakes in the traditions of Hindus too but you've to keep in mind that they are thousands of years old like all the other religions' traditions but we're rational enough to reject the ones which are not contemporary and are still working on making it suit the current era.
Passing judgments on things which are already abolished wont achieve anything.

There is a saying in Farsi. "Neem Hakeem Khatra-e Jaan, Neem Mullah khatra-e Eemaan." Meaning: a half learned physician is a danger to life and a half learned Mullah is a danger to faith (Islam)."
Pakistan is ruled by Mullahs and almost all are half learned Mullahs. Politicians including Mr. Rehman Malik fear Mullahs and they will do everything possible to protect them from the wrath of Mullahs.
Allah says in Holy Quran "If any one killed a person, it would be as if he killed all mankind; and if any one saved the life of a person, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind." (Quran V: 32). Can you imagine what is the value of a single life in front of Allah? But Mullah gives blessings to Muslim youths and prepares them to blow up in mosques killing Muslims standing in front of Allah in Salaat. Let us follow Deen of Allah, not Deen of Mullah.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan need to issue a special edict to bring these extremists to account. There need to be severe punishments for those who have rendered these acts by taking the laws of Pakistan into their dirty hands. These extremists have declared an open war on Pakistan's citizens. If you do not take action now they will continue their war against Pakistan. These extremists are the elements who were against the creation of Pakistan and the ideals of Quid -e-Azam. The activities of these extremists need to be wiped out throughout Pakistan. Just closing their websites is like putting a band aid on Pakistan's wounds. This is what Quran says about dressing for women and men. It does not specify niqab or hijab, which are creations of Mullahs and blind following of a backward arab culture.
'Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof. " [Quran : 24.31]
" Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that will make for greater purity for them, and God is well acquainted with all they do. " [Quran : 24.30]
" And O ye believers turn ye all together toward God, so that ye may attain bliss. " [Quran : 24.31]

Being a Pakistani agnostic, who hurts at the sight of how poverty and ignorance mixed with a backward religion is destroying our country, i instinctively judge all women in Hijab. however, I enjoyed your article and must agree with your voice of reason.

Abdul Rehman Malik Sahab is not sure how long he and his party will be in office because of their lack of interest in solving ANY public issue but creating new problems for the people.
The best person would be the head of Pakistan Internet Exchange (PIE) or Chief Justice for directing PIE to establish an online form to enter URLs of such websites that need to be banned.
Since you guys are in print media, you can create a momentum about this effort on other channels and news papers.

Honestly,i feel forcing a child to do porn or watching it should be given serious capital punishment because it can cause abuse against children..

If we want to survive in 21st century then the logic is only weapon. If we think we can shut up any school of thought on the power of weapon then there is no limit ,no end and the result will be worst than what we are having in our country now-a-days. Where did you get this info about Hindus 'kissing' all these articles. Anyway, personal belief is another matter altogether - a Prophet for you may be the best person who walked on the earth but to a rational mind he was just an ordinary man with totally manly desires.
Just the other day I saw a lady in a head to toe burqa rushing to catch a train with a baby in her arms. The extra long burqa got tangled in her feet and she fell forward with the baby. Luckily, the baby was safe but as she picked up the baby with a hand, she was adjusting the veil with the other hand.

Religion is nothing but one's perception to look at GOD. It's like sun glasses but instead of wearing it on our eyes, people put it on the brain. Religion is not about hating other's perception, but to be compassionate, humanity. While uttering the very word Allah or God, bhagwan, jesus our head should bow in respect and not be aggressive, violent. Being religious does not mean we undermine other religions and people who follow it. When someone show me the color of blood other than RED, I would believe and follow them. Till that time let the peace prevail on this earth. Naquab, Burkha or any other such dresses should not be determining factors about the human being, but their karma. Think something good about improving the shameful, fearful, painful lives millions of human beings are leading today. So stop all this non-sense about religion. On the name of religion we have created more problems in the world than making it more livable place. Our EGO will never allow to settle the argument as far as the religion goes. So keep religion to homes. Don't make a world problem which is the case today.

Our Interior Minister can close a few websites, but that will not stop increasing extremism and terrorism in Pakistan. The nation has been brought to the brink of anarchy and collapse, we need to wake up to this national threat and act now. What is needed is "zero tolerance", with swift and exemplary punishment given to the perpetrators, regardless of their political or religious affiliation. As our courts have failed to punish the terrorists and stop their destruction of the country, they should be tried by Military courts since we are in a state of war.

Great are your views, Sana, on asking for the expansion of Sectarian hatred, porn to be included in banned list of websites.
But arent you contradicting yourself and assisting these websites in a way by presenting the links to these on your 'open letter' so that people of my likes who were oblivious to these links get tempted to check what are they all about and add to their 'hits' count. True they exist , but then why should their access be facilitated through your open letter.
Isn't that a subtle way of advertising for them?

As a true well wisher of Pakistan,I wish to compliment Sana Saleem. It is high time that this debate about blasphemy is elevated to an intellectual one rather than a convenient definition by a few. The Prophet stood for enlightened ideas and thoughts and his stature will not be dimished by someone perceived to be offending him. It is time for mature debate and this will require the internet to remain a forum.

why you guys take so seriously what these politicians say.this minister is on record admitting that target killing is not a new phenomena in karachi. one says degree is degree; whether fake or real. they all want votes and public support.channels which wanted facebook blocked now have their facebook pages. its all about popularity, making hifi statements to capture the limelight.

For 'Proud to be Hindu Doctor from UK' - first of all sir i wish you had done us a big favour and just told us your name. secondly - i do believe that if one is not well versed with a topic, should not pass strong opinions on it. Right of opinion is not absoute freedom.
Just as you have v. callously said you feel offended by muslim women wearing a burqa - it is not your place to comment and she is not asking 'you' or your wife/sister/daughter to wear one.
If one were to comment on the hindu tradition/custom of kissing, wrist bands, time clock, calendar and open air - with the claim that time, air and etc are all Gods, then surely the commentatros would find it 'offensive' to their rational mind. However it doesn't harm us if you kiss a wrist watch.- we take it as hindus respecting time, which is a noble trait to have.

a thought provoking letter or blog, we as a nation are doing more harm to islam than any non muslim, we our acting like kuwain key maindak. if we visit any country even islamic country they look every pakistani as a terrorist. it is not the reasponsibility of goverment only but of all citizens specially the muslim citizens not to propagate these terrorist elements,and try to be more tollerant towards everyone.

Nothing to do with mosques but ignorance of ppl... It amazes me when I see some women covered in different funny ways (their choice tho), bcoz instead of following the Book of God they read books written by different people from here & there and would associate their act with religion but what can you say in the 'Land of Pures' even the so called religious scholars defend suicide and murder on the name of a religion which clearly prohibits it in strongest words possible
