PESHAWAR, May 7: Police of the provincial capital on Tuesday impounded scores of vehicles for election duties.

An official of local police said around 200 vehicles, including vans and mini-trucks, had been seized and more would be taken into custody in the days ahead.

He said police had no option but to impound vehicles due to unavailability of resources, especially when the Election Commission of Pakistan had ordered police to ensure early transportation of election material to the relevant polling stations.

“We will pay fare to vehicle owners, who will get back vehicles once the election material is transported to the required places in the district of Peshawar,” the official said.

Meanwhile, a representative of a nongovernmental organisation said police had also taken vehicles of many NGOs into custody.He said vehicles were impounded at a University Road checkpost and that the action was taken without intimation to the relevant officials.

POLICE ARREST OUTLAW: Police on Tuesday arrested a criminal, whose gang is involved in bank robberies and killing of a security guard in Peshawar.According to a spokesman for local police, Abdur Rasheed, a resident of Lachi area in Kohat, was arrested on a tip-off.

He said the arrested man had admitted looting millions of rupees from a bank’s branch in Karkhano Market, Peshawar on Oct 27, 2010.

The spokesman said the arrested man was a member of an inter-provincial gang of bank looters and currently lived in Shahkas area of Khyber Agency and that his accomplices would be arrested soon.
