KARACHI, Feb 6: The Action Committee for Rehabilitation of Government Employees has warned that it would launch a campaign if the government continued to dishonour its commitment to grant ownership rights of government quarters and colonies to their allottees.

Speaking at a press conference at the press club here on Thursday, chief of the organization, Riaz Haider, successive governments had promised to meet the government employees’ demand but none of them kept its words. He said the allottees of the government quarters at Martin Road, Jehangir Road, F. C. Area, Pakistan Quarters, etc. had on various occasion been assured of the implementation of the decision. He regretted that no progress had been made in this regard as yet.

Mr Haider also called for the withdrawal of eviction notices aimed at dislodging retired government servants and the heirs of the employees who died during service. Allottees of both the categories deserve proprietary rights of their houses, he said.

Regarding living conditions in the employees’ colonies, he pointed out that the inhabitants were suffering a lot due to the inadequate civic facilities. He observed that the relevant authority, Public Works Department, was unable to ensure proper and adequate facilities due to the lack of funds.

Speaking on behalf of the occupants of most of the servant quarters, Mr Haider offered a reasonable price for the transfer of the government properties in the name of their occupants.

He, however, could not give a satisfactory reply to a question about some of the genuine allottees having handed over possession of their quarters to somebody else in violation of the prescribed rules and regulations.

Chief of the Federal Government Pensioners Rehabilitation Association, Tasadduq Bilgrami, representative of Jehangir Road West Residents Welfare Association, Tufail Ahmed, representative of Martin Quarters Residents Welfare Association, Dr Ayub Siddiqui, and others were present at the news conference.
